Dental Cleanings
Scheduling dental cleanings in Tucson, AZ, every six months is essential for your oral health. If you have not been to the dentist in a while or are taking a child to the dentist for the first time, you may not know what to expect. Rest assured, Carlos Rodriguez, DMD, and his team will take excellent care of you.
Why Are Regular Dental Cleanings Important?
Even when you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, significant oral health issues can develop. Gum disease and tooth decay are just two common examples. Everyone develops plaque and tartar on their teeth over time, and these substances are impossible to remove with a toothbrush alone.
Plaque is a sticky substance that forms due to bacterial growth. As food breaks down, the tiny particles turn into bacteria that eventually become plaque. Tartar contains calculus deposits that build up on your teeth over time. Your teeth have continuous salvia exposure, contributing to the calculus deposits.
Our dental assistants use special tools to scrape and remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. The plaque and tartar will develop into tooth decay and cause other potential problems if left on your teeth long enough.
Steps Involved in Your Dental Cleaning
The dental hygienist working with Dr. Rodriguez uses an ultrasonic instrument that sends vibrations to your teeth. The vibrations loosen larger pieces of tartar off your teeth. At the same time, the device sprays a light mist of water onto your teeth to wash away smaller pieces of tartar. Larger deposits of tartar require manual scraping by a dental assistant.
The last step before Dr. Rodriguez checks your teeth for cavities or other problems is for your dental assistant to polish your teeth. Keep in mind that the polish is gritty and won’t feel the same as your regular toothpaste. Your dental assistant may also apply fluoride for the final step. You can choose the flavor of fluoride if you would like.
